Adventures in Learning

Our enrichment programs for children during the critical hours after school and during the summer.

If you were to ask Illinois’ law enforcement leaders to name the most effective strategy for reducing youth violence and crime, most of them would NOT answer, “hire more police officers or install more metal detectors and surveillance cameras in schools.” A whopping 72% believe “more afterschool programs and educational child care programs” are the most effective strategy for reducing youth violence and crime. That is why Adventures in Learning (AIL) is so vital. With the support of Holy Family friends, after school hours — and summertime, too — are transformed into learning adventures where children explore different areas to connect with their passion. The staff is there to guide them with comprehensive programming and nurturing care to help develop the mind, body and spirit.

The after-school program operates five days per week during the school year, providing more than 100 young people with a safe haven, caring and trusted adult role models, educational and arts enrichment, technology, and athletics. During the summer, 150 campers enjoy eight weeks of a full-day camp that combats the “summer learning loss.”

What makes Adventures in Learning especially unique on the west side of Chicago?

• Caring and trusted adult role models shape, inspire, motivate, and challenge each child to become hopeful children and leaders in their community.

• Extended academic instruction - Homework support in the after-school hours, and summer school academic instruction for children who have fallen behind.

• Added enrichment - technology, field trips, swimming lessons, sports and outdoor activities that might not otherwise be readily available in the community.

• Creative Expression support: dance, art, theater, and music give children an opportunity to discover new strengths.

AIL is making a difference: 87% of participants state that after their involvement in the program, they feel better about their future; 86% are able to say “no: to things they know are wrong; 92% are better at standing up for what they believe. 85% said they now make good decisions and solve problems.
